Died: Ap­ril 21, 1918, Los An­ge­les, Ca­li­for­nia, while vi­sit­ing his daugh­ter.

Buried: Home of Peace Ce­me­te­ry and Ema­nu-El Mau­so­le­um, Col­ma, Ca­li­for­nia.

Biography

Josef was the son of can­tor Jo­sef Stark and Jo­se­pha Stark, and hus­band of Ro­sa Wein­berg­er.

He emi­grat­ed from Aus­tria with his fa­mi­ly in 1871, set­tling in New York.

He wrote two op­er­et­tas as a young man, and re­turned to Aus­tria to stu­dy mu­sic in Vi­en­na around 1885.

In 1891, he be­came can­tor at Con­gre­ga­tion Beth Elo­him in Brook­lyn, New York.

In the fall of 1893, he ac­cept­ed a can­tor po­si­tion at Con­gre­ga­tion Ema­nu-El, San Fran­cis­co, Ca­li­for­nia, where he served two de­cades.
