George was the son of James Jackson Speer and Emley Wesley Davis, and husband of Lena Darling Brock (married February 27, 1920).
He grew up in Houston, Alabama, and has been quoted as saying, I met a singer’s daughter at a singing convention, got married in a singer’s home and raised a singing family.
Patriarch of the Singing Speer Family, he and Lena taught singing schools, and wrote an estimated 600 Gospel songs.
He was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1971, and the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1997.
