Biography

George was the son of James Jack­son Speer and Em­ley Wes­ley Davis, and hus­band of Le­na Dar­ling Brock (mar­ried Feb­ru­ary 27, 1920).

He grew up in Hous­ton, Ala­ba­ma, and has been quot­ed as say­ing, I met a sing­er’s daugh­ter at a sing­ing con­ven­tion, got mar­ried in a sing­er’s home and raised a sing­ing fa­mi­ly.

Patriarch of the Sing­ing Speer Fa­mi­ly, he and Le­na taught sing­ing schools, and wrote an es­ti­mated 600 Gos­pel songs.

He was in­duct­ed in­to the Gos­pel Mu­sic As­so­cia­tion Hall of Fame in 1971, and the South­ern Gos­pel Mu­sic As­so­cia­tion Hall of Fame in 1997.
