Son of Dan­i­el Frank­lin South­wick, Frank stu­died mu­sic un­der The­o­dore Thom­as, Ot­to Sing­er and George E. Whit­ing of New York. At age 15, he be­came or­gan­ist of the First Bap­tist Church of Mer­i­den. He later served as or­gan­ist at Christ Church, Hart­ford; Church of the Ho­ly Trin­i­ty, Mid­dle­town; First Pres­by­ter­i­an Church of En­gle­wood, New Jer­sey; and in New York Ci­ty at the Church of the Ho­ly Trin­i­ty, St. An­drew’s & the West End Pres­by­ter­i­an Church.
