Son of Dr. Smyttan of the Bombay Medical Board, Smyttan was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (BA 1845). He took Holy Orders in 1848, and served as Rector of Hawksworth, Nottinghamshire, England (1850–59). His works include:
