Smyth at­tend­ed the In­sti­tute for Mu­sic­al Art in New York, and played in the Me­tro­pol­i­tan Op­e­ra Com­pa­ny. He al­so served as choir di­rect­or at church­es in At­lan­ta, Georg­ia, and In­di­an­a­po­lis, In­di­a­na, as song lead­er for Sal­va­tion Ar­my tours with Maud Ball­ing­ton Booth, and Wil­bur Chap­man. From 1913 on­ward, he was the mu­sic di­rect­or at the Eu­clid Av­e­nue Bap­tist Church in Cleve­land, Ohio. He al­so led songs at the na­tion­al con­ven­tion of the Amer­i­can Re­pub­li­can Par­ty in 1924, and for con­ven­tions of Ro­ta­ry In­ter­na­tion­al. His works in­clude:
