Smith began his career as a musician, playing in the music halls of London’s East End.
He eventually moved into evangelism, and became a personal friend of Charles Spurgeon. He helped establish Spurgeon’s Stockwell orphanage in 1877, and became one of Spurgeon’s best known biographers.
