Biography

Smith began his ca­reer as a mu­si­cian, play­ing in the mu­sic halls of Lon­don’s East End.

He ev­en­tu­al­ly moved in­to ev­an­gel­ism, and be­came a per­son­al friend of Charles Spur­geon. He helped es­tab­lish Spur­geon’s Stock­well or­phan­age in 1877, and be­came one of Spur­geon’s best known bio­graph­ers.
