Smith began his career as a musician, playing in the music halls of Lon­don’s East End. He eventually moved into evangelism, and became a personal friend of Charles H. Spurgeon. He helped establish Spurgeon’s Stockwell orphanage in 1877, and became one of Spurgeon’s best known biographers. Smith’s works in­clude:
