When he was thirteen years old, Smith’s left leg was amputated above the knee due to an infection. Late in 1852 he joined the Seventh-day Adventists, and in 1853 began to contribute to their Review and Herald, where he also worked along side his older sister Annie Smith. In 1855 he became editor of the Review, a position he held on and off until his death. Smith’s works include:
