Biography

George was the un­cle of Hen­ry Smart.

An or­gan­ist, com­pos­er and con­duc­tor, he helped found the Lon­don Phil­har­mon­ic So­cie­ty in 1813. In 1822, he was ap­point­ed or­gan­ist at the Cha­pel Roy­al.

He was well known for the fes­ti­vals he con­duct­ed in Li­ver­pool, Man­ches­ter, Dub­lin, Cam­bridge, Bath, and else­where.

Works

In 1841, he ed­it­ed a Col­lect­ion of ma­dri­gals by Or­lan­do Gib­bons, and pub­lished his own glees and can­ons in 1863. He wrote most­ly re­li­gious mu­sic.
