George was the uncle of Henry Smart.
An organist, composer and conductor, he helped found the London Philharmonic Society in 1813. In 1822, he was appointed organist at the Chapel Royal.
He was well known for the festivals he conducted in Liverpool, Manchester, Dublin, Cambridge, Bath, and elsewhere.
In 1841, he edited a Collection of madrigals by Orlando Gibbons, and published his own glees and canons in 1863. He wrote mostly religious music.
