Daughter of James Bell, a Glas­gow ad­vo­cate, Jane con­trib­ut­ed sev­er­al piec­es to The Ed­in­burgh Li­ter­a­ry Jour­nal (ed­it­ed by her bro­ther, Hen­ry G. Bell), and lat­er to the Scot­tish Christ­ian Her­ald. Her husband was her cou­sin, J. Bell Simp­son of Glas­gow. Her works in­clude:
