Simmonds was a Presbyterian missionary, with his wife Nessie, in Ecuador and Mexico for many years. Later, he ran a publishing company, Cánticos Escogidos, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Duarte, California. He is said to have translated over 800 hymns.

Simmonds was said to have had a beautiful bass voice, singing the national anthem at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles when he was over 100 years old. His works include:
