Minot was the son of Langdon Simons and Sarah Frances Shepard, and husband of Helen Louise Savage (married 1894).
He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire; Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts (BA 1891, BST 1894); and Meadville Theological School, Meadville, Pennsylvania (now Meadville Lombard Theological School, Chicago, Illinois) (DD 1921).
Ordained a Unitarian minister in 1895, he served pastorates in Billerica, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; and New York City. He was the sixth pastor at All Souls Unitarian church in New York City, 1923–41.
He was also a preacher at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio (1904–19), and a member of the board of preachers at Harvard University (1912–13).
