Biography

George was the son of Fran­cis N. Sim­monds and Ma­ry R. Hollick, and hus­band of Nes­sie Maud Whit­burn-Spen­cer (mar­ried 1913, Phi­la­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia).

He and Nes­sie were Pres­by­ter­ian mis­sion­ar­ies in Ecua­dor and Mex­ico for ma­ny years. Lat­er, he ran a pub­lish­ing com­pa­ny, Cán­ti­cos Es­co­gi­dos, in Al­bu­quer­que, New Mex­ico, and Du­ar­te, Ca­li­for­nia. He re­port­ed­ly trans­lat­ed ov­er 800 hymns.

Simmonds was said to have a beau­ti­ful bass voice, sing­ing the na­tion­al an­them at Dodg­er Sta­di­um in Los An­ge­les when he was ov­er 100 years old.
