Samantha’s parents were Russell Giles Whipple and Mary Allen Whipple. Around 1870, she married William John Shoup (1846-1893), a classmate of hers at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. As of 1910, she was living in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to an article she wrote for The Independent, volume LXIX, July-December 1910, page 114. She was also listed in Indiana Authors, by Minnie Olcott Williams (Indianapolis, Indiana: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1916). A letter in the Atlantic Monthly (volume 130, page 575), states she was in San Jose, California, in 1922. Her works include:
