Biography

John was the son of Ma­jor Nor­man Shairp of Hous­toun.

His edu­ca­tion in­clud­ed the Uni­ver­si­ty of Glas­gow (1836–39); Snell Ex­hib­it­or, Bal­li­ol Col­lege, Ox­ford (1840); and New­di­gate Prize (1842).

For a time he was as­sist­ant mas­ter at Rug­by, then Pro­fess­or of La­tin at St. An­drews (1861); Prin­ci­pal of the Unit­ed Col­lege of St. Sal­va­tor and St. Le­on­ard, St. An­drews (1868); and Pro­fess­or of Po­et­ry, Ox­ford (1877).

The Uni­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh con­ferred a LL.D. on him in 1884.
