Scott studied at Brown Un­i­ver­si­ty, Pro­vi­dence, Rhode Island (graduated in arts 1836), and New­ton Theological College, New­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts (graduated 1842).

He entered the Bap­tist ministry in 1842, and served in Pe­ters­burg, Vir­gin­ia; Port­land, Maine; Fall Ri­ver, Mas­sa­chu­setts; and Yon­kers, New York.
