Scott was a graduate of Knox College at the University of Toronto (PhD). Ordained a United Church of Canada minister in 1926, he served in Long Branch, Ontario. He went on to teach at Union College (now the Vancouver School of Theology), Vancouver, British Columbia; United Theological College, McGill University, Montreal (where he was the first dean of the Faculty of Divinity/Religious Studies); and Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey (chair of the religion department and Danforth Professor of Religion). He also served as president of the Fellowship for a Christian Social Order, and was a Royal Canadian Air Force chaplain in World War II. His works include:
