After grad­u­at­ing in 1861 from Lu­ther Coll­ege, Rygh at­ten­ded Lu­ther Sem­in­a­ry and Cap­i­tal Un­i­ver­si­ty for two years, and taught at Lu­ther Sem­in­a­ry in 1883. He went on to serve as pas­tor in Port­land Maine (1884); teach­er at Wit­ten­berg Acad­e­my (1889-90); pas­tor in Grand Forks, North Da­ko­ta (1890-1); teach­er at North Da­ko­ta Un­i­ver­si­ty (1891-5) and Mount Ho­reb, Wis­con­sin (1895-8); pas­tor in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois (1899-1910); teach­er at St. Olaf Col­lege (1910-13); and pas­tor in Min­ne­a­po­lis, Min­ne­so­ta (1920-30). He al­so ed­it­ed the Unit­ed Lu­ther­an (1909-14), the Amer­i­can Lu­ther­an Sur­vey (1914-21) and the Lu­ther­an Her­ald (from 1925).
