Born: Ap­ril 28, 1798, An­ders­ton, Glas­gow, Scot­land.

Died: Au­gust 16, 1873, Lan­cas­ter, Mas­sa­chu­setts.

Biography

William was the son of Alex­an­der Rus­sell and Ja­net Ja­mie­son.

He em­i­grated from Scot­land, and was in Sa­van­nah, Geor­gia, by 1817, and sub­se­quent­ly at oth­er lo­ca­tions.

He was an ac­tive pro­mo­ter of teach­ers’ as­so­ci­ations and si­mi­lar pro­jects, and did much to fur­ther the cause of Am­er­ican edu­ca­tion.
