Russell was educated at the University of London (BA, engineering, 1889; BMus 1894), and was music director of the Haberdasher’s Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree, Hertfordshire. He also served as organist and choirmaster at Holy Trinity Church, Hoxton (1893), and St. Edmund’s, Lombard Street, London (1895).
