Rowe’s parents were John Franklin Rowe and Editha Mary Pardee. He attended the public schools, and for a year, Buchtel College in Akron. By age 10, he was a news boy for the Akron Daily Beacon, and later became the paper’s telegraph editor.

In 1887, Rowe moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to help his father run  the Christian Leader. Later in life, he also served on the board of directors for both the Potter Orphans’ Home and the Tennessee Orphans’ Home, and managed the F. L. Publishing company on Elm Street in Cincinnati.
