Rothensteiner’s fam­i­ly moved to Ger­ma­ny when he was two years old, and re­turned to Amer­i­ca when he was five. He at­tend­ed Saint Fran­cis Sem­in­a­ry, Mil­wau­kee, Wis­consin, and af­ter ord­in­a­tion served in var­i­ous par­ish­es in St. Lou­is. In 1887, he be­came pas­tor of St. Mi­chael’s Par­ish, Fred­erick­town, Mis­sou­ri, and in 1907, pas­tor of the Ho­ly Ghost Church in St. Lou­is, where he stayed the rest of his life. In his last years, he served as his­tor­i­an of the Arch­di­o­cese of St. Lo­uis.
