Charles was the son of Hez­e­ki­ah Root and Ma­ria Jenks, and hus­band of An­nie Eli­za Atch­in­son.

The 1871–72 city di­rec­to­ry of Spring­field, Mas­sa­chu­setts, stat­ed he was in the choir of the First Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church.
