A book deal­er by pro­fess­ion, Rob­bins con­trib­ut­ed prose and verse to news­pa­pers of the day. In the Amer­i­can ci­vil war, he held the rank of first lieu­ten­ant as a quar­ter­mas­ter in the 16th Con­nec­ti­cut Vol­un­teer In­fan­try; cap­tured and held pris­on­er, he was event­u­al­ly re­leased for med­i­cal rea­sons. Af­ter the war, he served as ci­ty clerk in Hart­ford.
