Daniel married twice, to Katherine Burr and Frances Knowlton Lane. He and Katherine were the parents of Brian Crane.
He attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, then served in the American civil war (84th Ohio Volunteers).
He was ordained a Presbyterian Episcopal deacon in 1865, and a priest the following year. He served as rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Brandon, Vermont, and vicar of St. Paul’s Church in Concord, New Hampshire, for almost three decades.
He was also president the New Hampshire State Historical Society.
Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont, awarded him a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1885.
