A book dealer by profession, Robbins contributed prose and verse to newspapers of the day. In the American civil war, he held the rank of first lieutenant as a quartermaster in the 16th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry; captured and held prisoner, he was eventually released for medical reasons. After the war, he served as city clerk in Hartford.
