Théophile was the son of Jacques Fran­çois Thé­o­dore Ri­vi­er and Jo­sé­phine Fran­çoise Charl­otte Vieus­seux. He mar­ried twice, to Az­e­line Schloe­sing (1863, Mar­seille, France) and Fran­çoise Mar­i­anne Rou­let.

A Swiss Pro­test­ant min­is­ter, Ri­vi­er served pas­tor­ates in Mon­tendre, Cha­rente-Mar­i­time, France; Saint-Éti­enne, Bor­deaux, France; Maz­a­met, Morges, Vaud, Switz­er­land; and Av­enches-Mon­tet, Vaud, Switz­er­land.
