Théophile was the son of Jacques François Théodore Rivier and Joséphine Françoise Charlotte Vieusseux. He married twice, to Azeline Schloesing (1863, Marseille, France) and Françoise Marianne Roulet.
A Swiss Protestant minister, Rivier served pastorates in Montendre, Charente-Maritime, France; Saint-Étienne, Bordeaux, France; Mazamet, Morges, Vaud, Switzerland; and Avenches-Montet, Vaud, Switzerland.
