Ernest’s father was Edd Rippetoe, a pioneer settler in Comanche County. He married Myrtle Hammitt in 1912, and the couple had three children.

For a number of years, Rippetoe taught singing schools in Erath and Comanche counties. He was a member of the original Stamps Quartet, and composed many songs published by the Stamps-Baxter Music Company. He also helped organize the Texas State Singing Convention, and served as its president for three years, until 1959.

Rippetoe was ordained to preach at the Highland Baptist Church in 1938. He moved to Stephenville, Texas, the same year and was pastor of the Washington Street Baptist Church there for 24 years until his death.
