Son of an hymnodist, Reid was educated at Oberlin College (BA), Oberlin, Ohio, and Yale Divinity School (BDiv), New Haven, Connecticut. He served as a medic in World War II, spent eight months as a prisoner of war in Germany. When he returned to America, he pastored Methodist churches in North Dakota and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In 1978, he became a District Superintendent for the United Methodist Church. He was active in the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada.
