William was the son of William Reid of Moneymore, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry, husband of Edith Fowler, and father of William Reid, Jr.
Emigrating to America in 1900, settled in the Bronx, New York, in 1904.
He was educated at New York University (BD 1915, master in journalism, 1917).
He was with the Hymn Society as president (1942–45), executive director, and editor of The Hymn (1966–76).
A member of the Methodist denomination, he edited The Pastor’s Journal, and directed the denomination’s News Service of the Board of Missions.
