Daughter of a Meth­od­ist min­is­ter in Penn­syl­van­ia’s Wy­om­ing Con­fer­ence, Pur­vis grad­u­at­ed from Will­iams­port Dick­in­son Sem­in­ary in 1860. Af­ter mar­ry­ing, she lived in Will­iam­sport, where she was a mem­ber of the Mul­ber­ry Street Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church. She taught in­stru­ment­al and vo­cal mu­sic at the Sem­in­ary there (1884-88), but was an in­val­id for the last sev­er­al years of her life.
