Son of Congregational minister Ebenezer Prout, Ebenezer the younger was a scholar and editor. Educated at London University (BA 1854), he taught at the National Training School for Music (1876–82), the Royal Academy of Music (1879–1909), and Trinity College, Dublin (1894). He edited the Monthly Musical Review (1871–75), and was a music critic for The Academy (1874–79) and The Athenaeum (1879–89). He composed a number of cantatas, an organ concerto, symphonies, and church music.
