A composer, songwriter, and teacher, Proch first studied for a law career, but eventually took up the violin, first performing in public in 1834 in Vienna. In 1837, he was appointed Kapellmeister at Vienna’s Josefstadt theater, at the court opera in 1840, and at the Comic Opera in 1874. Among his songs is the well known Das Alpenhorn. He also wrote the three-act comic opera Ring und Maske.
