Biography

Emilie was the daugh­ter of Hal­vor Poulss­on, a Nor­we­gian im­mi­grant, and Ruth Anne Mit­chell.

After go­ing blind, prob­ab­ly in her teen years, she learned braille at the Perkins School for the Blind in Wa­ter­town, Mas­sa­chu­setts.

She later taught and lec­tured in Bos­ton, and was an ad­vo­cate for ear­ly child­hood edu­ca­tion and the kin­der­gar­ten move­ment.
