Biography

Emmanuel was the son of Si­mon Pop­pen and Ca­ro­line Buerk­le, and hus­band of An­na Tre­bel.

He was edu­cat­ed at Ca­pi­tal Uni­ver­si­ty, Co­lum­bus, Ohio (BA 1893, DD 1928); the Gra­du­ate Lu­ther­an Se­mi­na­ry, Co­lum­bus, Ohio (1895); and Au­gus­ta­na Col­lege, Rock Is­land, Il­li­nois (Doctor of Hu­mane Let­ters, 1942).

Ordained in 1895, Pop­pen served pas­tor­ates in Ohio, and was pre­si­dent of the Am­er­ican Lu­ther­an Church (1937–50).

Works

Poppen was on the Lu­ther­an In­ter­sy­nod­i­cal Hym­nal Com­mit­tee that pro­duced the 1930 Am­er­ican Lu­ther­an hym­nal.
