Pontius was a farmer, justice of the peace, and, in his early years, a band leader and singing school leader. He served as a sergeant during the American civil war, in the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg. He was active in the United Brethren church most of his life. Near the end of his life, he was director of the Department of Music, Minneapolis School of Music. His works include:
