Biography

Edward was the son of Will­iam Phelps and Ma­ry Hunt, and hus­band of Har­ri­et E. Gould­ing.

He was play­ing the or­gan at a Spring­field church by age 16.

Around age 19, he be­gan work­ing for the Spring­field Re­pub­li­can news­pa­per. He went on to work at the Ev­en­ing Un­ion and The Home­stead, and even­tu­al­ly ran his own pub­lish­ing com­pa­ny.
