Biography

Hallgrímur grew up in Hó­lar, where his fa­ther was a bell ring­er, and his cou­sin Guð­bran­dur Þor­láks­son was re­si­dent bi­shop.

As a young man, he tra­veled to Eur­ope, and ev­en­tu­al­ly at­tend­ed the sem­ina­ry at the Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our La­dy) in Co­pen­hag­en.

Seven years af­ter re­turn­ing to Ice­land, Hall­grí­mur was ap­point­ed min­is­ter at Hvals­nes. He showed him­self a skill­ful preach­er. and in 1651, he was re­ass­igned to Saur­bær in Hval­fjör­ður, ser­ving there the rest of his life.
