Peek worked as a car­pen­ter, farm­er and drug store clerk be­fore serv­ing in the Amer­i­can ci­vil war. He then pur­sued the role of flor­ist from 1881 to 1904, then be­came a Meth­od­ist lay min­is­ter and tra­veled through­out Amer­i­ca, in­clud­ing Maine, Flor­i­da, and Cal­i­for­nia. Though lack­ing for­mal mu­sic­al train­ing, he played the vi­o­lin, pi­a­no, and ban­jo. A mem­ber of the Nos­trand-De­Kalb Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church in Brook­lyn, New York, he be­came a ful­ly or­dained min­is­ter two months be­fore his death.
