Pearce studied organ under The­o­dore Ayl­ward, Will­iam Hoyte, and Ed­ward Hop­kins, and studied at Cam­bridge (BMus 1881, DMus 1884).

He served as organist at St. Mar­tin’s, Sal­is­bu­ry (1871–73); St. Luke’s, Old Street (1874); and St. Cle­ment’s, East­cheap (1885).

He was also Professor at Trinity College, Lon­don (1882), Dean of the College (1892), and Examiner at Cam­bridge for BMus (1888–91) and DMus (1895).
