Park was ed­u­cat­ed at Un­ion Coll­ege and the Unit­ed States Mil­i­tary Acad­e­my, West Point, New York. He served in the ar­my, then taught chem­is­try at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Penn­syl­van­ia. He took Ho­ly Or­ders in the Pro­test­ant Epis­co­pal Church and was or­dained in 1843. He served as pre­si­dent of Ra­cine Coll­ege, Wis­con­sin (1852-9); chan­cel­lor there (1858-63); Rec­tor of St. Luke’s Epis­co­pal Church in Ra­cine (1856-1863); and prin­ci­pal of a school in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, from 1863 un­til his death. He is some­times con­fused with his son of the same name, who be­came a well known sur­geon. The eld­er Park’s works in­­clude:
