Ovens, a minister, was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (MA, LLB), and at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. For over 30 years, he conducted seaside missions in Northern Ireland under the banner of the Children’s Special Service Mission (now known as the Scripture Union). He was also an honorary curate in the Church of England. His surname is sometimes (incorrectly) given as Owens.
