Nutter, a minister, graduated from the Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts, School of Theology in 1871, the year in which the Boston Theological School merged with Boston Un­i­ver­si­ty. The preface to his 1911 Hymns and Hymn Writers indicates he was in Berwick Park, Boston, Mas­sa­chu­setts, in 1911. By 1913, he was teaching hymnology at Boston Un­i­ver­si­ty. His works in­clude:
