Nutter, a minister, graduated from the Boston, Massachusetts, School of Theology in 1871, the year in which the Boston Theological School merged with Boston University. The preface to his 1911 Hymns and Hymn Writers indicates he was in Berwick Park, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1911. By 1913, he was teaching hymnology at Boston University. His works include:
