Nicholson attended the Rugby School, New College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music, and founded and directed the Royal School of Church Music. He played the organ in many locations:

In 1927, Nicholson founded the School of English Church Music. He edited Hymns An­cient and Mo­dern (1916–47), and was knighted in 1938. His works in­clude:
