Biography

Charles was the son of Hen­ry A. Sted­man and Sa­rah Lu­ther.

During the Am­eri­can Ci­vil War, he was a cor­por­al in Com­pa­ny K, 45th Re­gi­ment, Mas­sa­chu­setts Vol­un­teers (1862–63).

He at­tend­ed Am­herst Col­lege and Un­ion Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry, and was or­dained a Con­gre­ga­tion­al min­is­ter.

He pas­tored ov­er 25 years, then be­came as­so­ci­at­ed with the Unit­ed States For­est­ry Ser­vice, and de­vel­oped a re­pu­ta­tion as an out­stand­ing na­tur­al­ist.

As of 1904, he was Su­per­in­ten­dent of For­est Re­serves in Ca­li­for­nia.

He re­tired in 1905 to Ber­ke­ley, Ca­li­for­nia.
