Naylor studied under Robert Burton, and became organist at Scarborough in 1856, at York Minster in 1883. He was elected an hon­or­a­ry mem­ber of the Roy­al Acad­e­my of Music in 1895. Com­pos­er Ed­ward Nay­lor was his son.
