Son of com­pos­er John Nay­lor, Ed­ward was ed­u­cat­ed at Em­man­u­el Coll­ege, Cam­bridge (BA 1887, MusB & MA, 1891, MusD 1897), and en­tered the Roy­al Coll­ege of Mu­sic in 1888. He served as or­gan­ist of St. Michael’s, Ches­ter Square (1889); St. Ma­ry’s, Kil­burn (1896-7); and Em­man­u­el Coll­ege, Cam­bridge; and as as­sist­ant mas­ter at Leys School, Cam­bridge.
