Murray at­tend­ed the Free Coll­ege in Hal­i­fax, No­va Sco­tia, and was or­dained a Pres­by­ter­i­an min­is­ter. He ed­it­ed the Pres­by­ter­i­an Wit­ness for over 50 years, and wrote a num­ber of hymns, some of which ap­peared anon­y­mous­ly in that per­i­od­i­cal.
