May was the daugh­ter of hymn­ist Dan­iel Whit­tle, and wife of Wil­liam R. Moody (son of 19th Cen­tu­ry evan­gel­ist Dwight Moo­dy). She at­tend­ed Dwight Moo­dy’s Girl’s School in North­field, Mass­a­chu­setts; Ober­lin Coll­ege (1888-9); and the Roy­al Acad­e­my of Mu­sic in Lon­don (1890-1). A gift­ed sing­er, she as­sist­ed her fa­ther and Dwight Moo­dy in their evan­gel­ism ef­forts, and co-ed­it­ed (with Charles M. Al­ex­an­der) North­field Hymn­al No. 3.
