May was the daughter of Daniel Whittle and Abigail Hanson, and wife of William Revell Moody (son of 19th Century evangelist Dwight Lyman Moody).
She attended Dwight Moody’s Girl’s School in Northfield, Massachusetts; Oberlin College (1888–89); and the Royal Academy of Music in London (1890–91).
A gifted singer, she assisted her father and Dwight Moody in their evangelism work, and co-edited (with Charles M. Alexander) Northfield Hymnal No. 3.
