Merrick ma­tri­cul­at­ed at Ex­e­ter Col­lege, Ox­ford, June 27, 1865, age 23 (BMus June 28, 1865; BA 1871; MA 1878).

He was or­gan­ist at an un­known lo­ca­tion (pre­sum­a­bly near Ox­ford), 1867–71.

He served as a chap­lain at Her Ma­jes­ty’s Pri­son, West­min­ster (1878–73), and Mul­bank (from 1883). In 1896, he was a chap­lain in the pri­sons at Hol­lo­way and New­gate.
